Its humble beginnings, starting with an idea by the Duke of Wellington, produced the first Wellington boot made of leather. It was tall enough to protect the leg, going all the way to the knee. It was durable enough to last for a good long time, even when worn in the most wet and nasty weather conditions. And it was comfortable enough to be worn all day without undue pain or uncomfortable stress. The first Wellington boot was crafted by hand in 1817.
Then, in 1855, the innovation resulting in the vulcanization of rubber also resulted in the birth of a dream. An American businessman dreamt of making waterproof wellys out of the rubber material that was being manufactured in the U.S. But, he needed a ready market for waterproof wellington boots and chose Scotland as the headquarters for his new endeavor. The marriage of Wellington and Rubber was made and Mr. Norris opened a factory with only 4 employees. Making numerous rubber products, besides the boots, and to include golf balls, Mr. Norris managed to keep his company running and prospering, expanding to 600 employees over the course of 20 years. The company he founded made wellington boots and war supplies during both World War I and World War II, and his dream stayed alive, always growing at a steady pace.
