Its history though is the stuff legends are made of. About 38 years after the Original Wellington boots were first introduced in Europe, an American by the name of Henry Lee Norris, who had vast experience in the manufacturing of rubber, arrived in Scotland looking for a home for his new business venture, a rubber footwear factory. Starting small and diversifying for the sake of success, Mr. Norris’ company also made combs, golf balls, hot water bottles, conveyor belts, and the like. Growth was slow but steady until the advent of World War I when 1,185,036 pairs of Wellington boots were made for the soldiers in the trenches. The plant operated 24 hours a day. Then, during World War II, 80% of the mill’s total operations were dedicated to making war materials. In addition to the Original Wellington boots, they made gas masks, life belts and rubber ground sheets.

The Hunter Original Wellington boot was created in 1955; 100 years after Mr. Norris established his first small factory in Scotland. At that time, not only did they create the Original Hunter Wellington boot, they also introduced the Royal Hunter.  The Hunter boots were the first waterproof, rubber boot that was designed with the health of the foot in mind. Many people had orthopaedic issues that prevented them from being able to wear a wide range of footwear. The Hunter Short Wellington boot line addressed these requirements, as well as the fact that many people of shorter stature were uncomfortable in the Original Tall Wellington Boots; they chafed and pinched behind the knee. The Hunter line eventually became “the” work boot for both men and women in the mills and factories.

Company growth was not fast, though it got a shot in the arm when a Royal Warrant from HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was awarded in 1977. A decade later HM The Queen also awarded a Royal Warrant. In fact, both Paddington Bear and Lady Diana Spencer have worn Hunter Original Wellington boots, Lady Diana in her engagement pictures. Today, Hunter Wellington boots has a showroom on 7^th Avenue in New York City and is virtually a “household” name!
